Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez sent condolences to Iran on Saturday following the massive explosion at the Shahid Rajai port that has left a preliminary toll of fourteen dead and more than 700 wounded.

“We extend heartfelt condolences to the people and government of Iran for the explosion that occurred in the port of Shahid Rajaei, in the south of the country, which we extend to the families of the dead and wounded,” said the Cuban chancellor in a message on his social networks.

For its part, the Venezuela’s Bolivarian government also expressed its condolences to Iran, expressing solidarity with “brother People and Government of the Islamic Republic of Iran” and also “express to the families and friends of the victims the feelings of solidarity and support, as well as the wish for a speedy recovery for the wounded.”

He also encouraged the relief teams to continue with the humanitarian rescue efforts to assist those affected and the community close to the casualty, while reiterating to the “brother Iranian people” the deep feelings of solidarity, Brotherhood and human commitment in this difficult circumstance.

The incident occurred at noon in Iran, when several containers containing chemicals, which have not yet been identified, exploded on the docks of this port located in the Strait of Hormuz, official sources reported.

The spokesman for the National Crisis Management Organization, Hossein Zafari, explained, according to local media, that the explosion was so powerful that it was heard in a radius of 50 kilometres and there were tremors in some nearby areas, while the shock wave damaged buildings and cars in the area.
